On Saturday, October 13, I had the opportunity (and honor) to attend the 2nd Annual M.O.R.E/DAMZL Powder Puff Race for the Cure. The off-road race was exclusively for women drivers and co-drivers. The entry fee was $200, $100 of which went to M.O.R.E to cover the cost of holding the race and $100 of which was written directly to the Cedar Sinai Women’s Breast Cancer Research Institute. Additional funds were raised with the sale of raffle tickets, a silent auction, and a free-will donation BBQ. Last year, the Powder Puff Race raised more than $55,000 for breast cancer research. This year, there were significantly more entrants and a larger crowd. Though the final numbers are not yet in, there is hope that they raised even more money this year.
I went out to participate in a very small way. I didn’t race this year, but I did take our Pink Jeep, which will eventually become a Pit/Chase vehicle for next year’s race, when our car is ready. At the BBQ, we set up next to the DAMZL ladies and handed out breast cancer literature, which was provided by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. It was a great experience.
This weekend, the Barstow desert was full of more than just horsepower. What I saw was power of an entirely different kind. There was a community of people supporting survivors. There was a bond between strangers who were reaching out – both in sadness and in hope. There was a promise to return every year until it becomes unnecessary, until there is a cure.
