Johnson Valley Fun Ride

The event was a true success. The loop ride in the morning had over 800 entrants…multiple tables were full of people writing letters…the raffle jar was full…the tent was packed Saturday night for the speakers and band. It is assumed that around 4,000 people showed up for this event.

Saturday morning started with the entry for the loop ride that had trails for all the different vehicles that enjoy JV ~ “crowd” was certainly a word to use as more than 800 prepared to go out onto the trails. At noon, the rock crawlers took over the area just beyond the tent. With over 50 rock crawlers in attendance, there was quite a show going on. With the Red Bull Rock Crawling team on hand, Dustin gave the crowd an explanation of what was happening, while Becca showed them how it was done, and ultimately gave the crowd a pleaser when she completely endo’ed the jeep destroying all of her side panels. Alongside the Rock Crawlers were some very talented Motorcycle Trials riders. The goal of a Trials rider is to go from rock to rock while being slow and precise with no feet touching the ground. A huge crowd gathered to watch “just another day in the rocks” for these guys!

The afternoon is what I am going to call the “riding or hiding” time. The wind howled all day until sundown when it got just down right cold. But that didn’t stop the hard-core riders from jumping on their bikes, in their jeeps or side x side’s and heading out to enjoy the amazing trails of the area. While others found trailers and motorhomes to hide in and get out of the blowing dirt. I will admit to being a motorhome jumper as I was able to find different groups of people hiding out to talk to and catch up with.

6 o’clock the official ceremonies kicked off. Again, with the Land Closure being the focus of attention, most all of the off-road organizations were represented. Jerry from District 37 started the ceremonies by thanking Jeff from BRP for taking the time and effort to making this whole event happen. Then Steve from CAL4WD, Meg from ORBA, Jim from CORVA and Harry from FOJV all spoke about their organizations and how to help support and fight for keeping Johnson Valley open. Dustin from the Red Bull Rock Crawling Team spoke for a minute on the importance of this closure and then handed the microphone over to LtCol James McArthur for the military perspective on the issues. The evening continued with a 2 hour raffle full of amazing prizes then the TJ Krue band rocked the house.

This is the 2nd Annual BRP Fun Ride, the first one was held at Clear Creek in the midst of that land closure. This event was created to increase the awareness about the proposed 29 Palms Marine base expansion into the Johnson Valley area and raise funds for AMA D37’s Legal Defense Fund. The goal was to get people involved with the process through education, letter writing and donations. Everyone involved made this a great event and a true success. I think that more people were able to learn about the Land Closure issues and even more took the time to write a letter to be submitted. It is important that if you didn’t attend the event that you still find a way to participate in this issue…it is still new, and there are still a lot of voices that need to be heard from!

Ricky Johnson Race Series Rumor Confirmed

Since the very successful race that Ricky Johnson hosted at the Perris Auto Speedway on November 8th there have been rumors of a series coming in 2009. We have finally been able to confirm those rumors: There will be a 3 round Ricky Johnson Offroad Grand Prix. All of the information that we have is listed below. As soon as we get more we will let you know!

2009 Offroad Grand Prix Schedule:
* February 27-28 (Sportsman 27th, Pro 28th)

Sand Addiction Dune Tour Makes Stop in South Dunes

Over the weekend of October 17, 18, & 19, Sand Addiction Magazine hosted a series of family-oriented activities in the South Dunes/Gordon’s Well area. This is the second stop in the Sand Addiction Dune Tour for 2008. The temperatures hovered near 100 and the activities were just as hot.

Everyone, young and old, had a great time with an agenda full of safety-conscious, entertaining activities. Friday night began with the world premier of UTV Mayhem II, and bonfire, drive-in movie-style. Saturday’s events included a scavenger and a Polaris Show and Shine where participants had the opportunity to show off their driving skills and their gorgeous rides. The ATV Safety Institute also held rider certification classes for young riders to learn the most important aspects of safe duning. There were many winners in the raffle that took place Saturday afternoon and the list of prizes included items donated by: UTV Concepts, Forest River, Muzzys.com, OMF, Axia Alloys, Kalgard, Race 401, Powertank, Duneslider, PRP Seats, Billet King, Poles & Holders, Superclean, KW Machine Works, Power Madd, Accutronix, Offroaders Outreach.org, Nordskog, Gibson Performance, Arctic Cat, American Outdoor, and Lone Star Racing.

Throughout the day on Saturday, young duners were able to hang out in the Arctic Cat “Kid Zone.” There they could do arts and crafts, play in the bounce house, and burn off a little bit of energy with new friends. Sand Addiction Magazine and Kawasaki also coordinated a dune clean-up which started on Friday and ended on Sunday, providing parents the perfect opportunity to demonstrate responsible recreation with their children.

As with any great event, food was a major part of the fun. There’s nothing better than the smell of BBQ and two-stroke in the afternoon. Sand Addiction employees and volunteers served more than 300 hot dogs, 500 hamburgers, and 20 cases of water to hungry sand enthusiasts, which were provided by Yamaha.

An evening destination ride to Test Hill sponsored by Baja Designs rounded off the calendar of events for Saturday, were the Dune Tour staff met up with hundreds of magazine fans eager to race bikes, quads, Side X Sides, and buggies up the hill. They returned happy and ready for bed after a long, fun-filled day in the dunes.

The Sand Addiction Dune Tour will continue with another stop in Glamis in March of 09. Look for more information about activities and registration as the date approaches!

Public meetings to be held about possible marine expansion into Johnson Valley OHV area

Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) located in Twentynine Palms, CA recently submitted a withdrawal application to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to essentially put a hold on 422,000 acres while it studies those areas for possible acquisition into the base. Uses that are currently allowed in the area will continue, but no new uses or projects will be permitted.

A large portion of the Johnson Valley OHV area is being is located in that study area. Besides taking public comment, the purpose of these meetings is to help people understand both the proposed action and the decision making process.

Johnson Valley OHV area is approximately 189,000 acres and is located in the high desert of California, just east of Los Angeles. The area is a Mecca for off-road recreation and is home to many events including off-road racing and competitive rock crawling.

The public meetings are scheduled for October 23, 2008 at Hay’s Gym, Twentynine Palms Junior High School, 5798 Utah Trail, Twentynine Palms, CA from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and October 24 at Hilton Garden Inn, 12603 Mariposa Road, Victorville, CA from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

It is important that members of the OHV community attend these meetings and make it known how important this area is to the families that recreate there. The types of comments that would be most productive at a meeting like this would be: The Marines have yet to demonstrate that their need to train outweighs the devastating impact the loss of this area would have on our community. A better option would be to have the Marines expand to the east of the current base.

Damzl Powder Puff Race

M.O.R.E (Mohave Off-Road Enthusiast) and ROYAL PURPLE Synthetic Oils are proud to announce the 3rd annual Powder Puff race for the cure. Proceeds and donations acquired from this event will benefit Cedar Sinai Womens Breast Cancer Research Center.
This years grand prise Raffle was Donated by the YAMAHA corporation. A RHINO 700 FYI 4×4. This year’s event will take place in sunny Barstow California October 10th – 11th 2008. There will be a BBQ after the race Hamburgers, Hot dog, Chili, and who knows along with dancing under the stars in the dirt everyone’s welcome. Yes this is an all Ladies driving and co-driving event , all the hobby’s will be giving there all too pit support. All the pit support clubs Acme, Checkers, Fair. There are just too many to list will be donating pit support for ANY lady that needs help. Ladies may also pull into any pit at any time for help.

This event is not a trip to the grocery store it is a Full out RACE. Come out and meet the Ladies that drive these machines they are the greatest some are new to driving and there are those that race all the time and they are great. The Off Road Community has come together to support the fight against Breast cancer, we are growing ever year and plain on doing so until we find the cure. Please come out and support this Great Cause.

All drivers and co-drivers will be required to attend tech safety inspection, where ARTS will inspect all vehicles, fire-suits, and helmets for safety compliance. Actual race will begin on Saturday October 11th 2008. All vehicles will run a 20 mile loop maybe more??? and compete with vehicles split in 2 heats. Please come to Contingency on Friday to meet all the drivers and Contingency Sponsors for if it were not for them there would be no off road racing as we have come too know and love the sport.

A new race class for SideXSide UTV’S. All UTV’S must pass tech inspection with all the other classes. M.O.R.E will be using the BITD UTV regulations. For those of you who are not familiar with UTV racing please visit www.utvracingassociation.com for a quick brush up on safety regulations.
