PML announced today a new, aftermarket deep aluminum transmission pan for Nissan RE5-R05A transmissions found in Titan trucks and Armada SUVs. PML designed and developed this pan in response to demand from Titan owners for an extra-capacity pan.

PML’s Nissan transmission pan helps keep transmission oil cool in three ways. First, the pan adds 3.5 additional quarts of oil capacity. Second, the pan features raised fins on the outside. Third, PML designed cast-in baffles on the inside of the pan that keep oil near the filter inlet and aid in heat transfer from the oil to the pan.

PML’s new transmission pan also features a cast-in boss that can be drilled and tapped for a temperature sensor, 3/16-inch thick wall to add strength to the transmission case, 3/8-inch thick gasket flange for a secure seal, and a magnetic drain plug for easier, less messy maintenance.

This pan is made in the USA by PML. To purchase a pan or for more information, please contact PML.

The pan is available in as-cast, black, and polished finishes. The PML part number is 11037. PML also manufactures and sells a matching Titan differential cover.

MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER AT TWENTYNINE PALMS TO STUDY 422,000 ACRES OF LAND SURROUNDING THE BASE—INCLUDING MUCH OF A POPULAR OHV AREA—FOR POSSIBLE ACQUISITION

Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) located in Twentynine Palms, CA has submitted a withdrawal application to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to essentially put a hold on 422,000 acres while it studies those areas for possible acquisition into the base.

A large portion of the Johnson Valley OHV area is being considered. Johnson Valley OHV area is approximately 189,000 acres and is located in the high desert of California, just east of Los Angeles. The area is a Mecca for off-road recreation and is home to many events including off-road racing and competitive rock crawling.

For the past six months the OHV community has been aware that the Marines are studying this area for possible expansion. As a result, a small working group of OHV leaders has been working with the Marines to help them understand just how important this area is to the Southern California OHV community. It is the largest open OHV area in the country, and home to a myriad of competition events such as motorcycle races, 2- and 4-wheel drive off-road races and extreme rock crawling events. Jerry Grabow, President of the American Motorcyclist Association District 37, Off-Road, stated “Over half of our race program occurs on land within the Johnson Valley OHV Area. We have been racing in this area for over 50 years; there is simply not another open area large enough to hold these types of races.”

The withdrawal application the Marines submitted requires that the BLM prepare a “Notice of Proposed Withdrawal and Opportunity for Public Meeting.” When this notice is published in the Federal Register it starts a 90-day public comment period and segregates the public land identified in the application for two years. Uses that are currently allowed in the area will continue, but no new uses or projects will be permitted. “We are hopeful that another solution or compromise can be found that fulfills the training needs of the Marines while still allowing OHV recreation to continue in this area treasured by so many off-road enthusiasts,” stated Meg Grossglass, ORBA Land Use staff member.

The Longest Off-Road Race in the United States

This year’s TSCO “Vegas to Reno” – which is certifiably the Longest Off-Road Race in the United States at 457.5 miles, is already creating excitement among the off-road racing community. Casey Folks, Director of the Best in the Desert series, said, “2008 has already been a huge growth year for Best In The Desert off road desert racing in terms of participants. We are excited that the TSCO “Vegas to Reno” event, our flagship race, will carry on that momentum. Not only is this going to be a big event but it’s also the 12th running of TSCO “Vegas to Reno.” This race is open to all Best In The Desert classes – cars, trucks, UTVs, quads and motorcycles. And, with the ongoing changes in off-road racing, we expect over 300 entries.” Folks worked closely with the BLM to set up a course that avoids endangered species, and does not harm the environment. The course just changed to a start area 6.5 miles north of the town of Beatty, Nevada, with all classes off on Friday, August 22nd. Originally part of the Bullfrog Mining District, today Beatty serves as an important
gateway to Death Valley, and is 115 miles from Las Vegas. The course traverses a part of the legendary Pony Express Trail made famous 148 years ago, and finishes up east of Reno, Nevada.
The TSCO “Vegas to Reno” race takes racers from the high desert floor at 2,500 feet elevation to mountainous heights of over 9,000 feet, forcing competitors to adjust to the changing pressures, and endure extreme hot and cold temperature variations. This course features some of the toughest, and most varied terrain in the world. On the dry lakebed portions of the route speeds over 100 MPH are typical. Racers
must fight their way through narrow canyons, boulder lined paths, and deep silt beds.

Round five of the Championship Off Road Racing season brought some of the best racing yet as the series’ top drivers battled for every position on the track. On a day that had hotly contested races in both the Pro 2 and Pro 4 classes, the Pro 4 Jason Baldwin Memorial Cup Pro 4 race saw a continuation of the rivalry between existing champion Carl Renezeder and Monster Energy Drink/Forest County Potawatomi star Johnny Greaves.

In Pro 2, Makita/Rockstar Energy Drink driver Todd LeDuc turned back challenges from class leader Rockstar Energy Drink/Menzies Motorsports’s #21 Rob MacCachren and Red Bull/Bosch Power Tools’s Ricky Johnson to take his first win of the season. While the V8 trucks saw lots of big crashes and exciting lead changes, Traxxas/ Potawatomi Pro Lite pilot Jeff Kincaid took a 15 second lead going into the mandatory caution flag that was reduced to just three seconds as he and second place finisher Marty Hart separated themselves from the field.
