Other than a few quick work trips out to Glamis and a couple of Pismo trips, my bikes have been sitting in the garage chanting ride me, ride me, ride me… I just couldn’t listen to it anymore so we loaded up and headed out to Glamis for two days of riding.
The 86S was clear of any motorhomes, trucks or trailers broken down on the side of the road with flat tires or overheating. The gas stations were not packed with rigs trying to get water or fuel for all of their toys. Brawley was quiet with only one trailer in the grocery store parking lot and the stoplights seemed to stay green. The cow pasture seemed extremely stinky and there was no movement in Dunes Edge Storage. Pre-Season.
The wind blew on Friday like a wild fire. The tops of the dunes were sharp and sometime barely seeable. The sand was soft, yet weirdly hard where it had been packed down and not stirred for months. I could feel the paddle tire of my motorcycle chopping over the flat ground, and then as I approached a fresh dune the front tire sinking into the deep soft sand.
Friday night Gecko road started to come alive as every half hour or so a rig or two would fly by, excited as well to get into the sand and unload. As some complained about people driving so fast down Gecko, I just laughed…the phenomenon that you could actually get there 1 minute earlier and sink your feet into the sand!
On Saturday we headed over to Olds where there was actually a decent amount of people and about 30 big sand cars running the hill. New cars that couldn’t wait to be taken out and shown off. The quads, dirt bikes and rhinos buzzed the hill.
We continued our journey to vendor row to see who was there and what it looked like. Save your money! Bring your coins! Vendor row is now officially three rows that is graded and watered with a designated events area. One of those spots is Sand Addictions ~ our new home for the Glamis season.
Then off along sand highway to Comp that was empty and then back to Gecko for the Sand Drags. The drags were lined with about two dozen groups on the upwind side. A good quarter to half mile show for the sand cars to sprint their speed and lift their front wheels.
I had to leave Glamis on Saturday night so I could make it to the Off Road Expo on Sunday. Again driving along Gecko the street was quiet, the camps were small, and the 86S was rig free.
HOW THREE WEEKS WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING! LOL!!
See you at Glamis for the opening weekend! We will be on Vendors Row starting October 26th through the first week in December. Be sure to stop by and pick up the new magazine, check out our new line of clothes, see the vehicle of the weekend and all the other goodies that we will be bringing out to the sand!
