Amazing! Not sure what other word to use. This is one of the few weekends that I didn’t have to work and so what do I do…head to Chula Vista to camp for the weekend and watch the CORR races! I guess it is just in my blood…why clean the house, that’s what the maid is for…right!
It is unfortunate that this was the first race that I have been able to catch. It was awesome! The trucks, buggies and rhinos were flying around the track. Sliding in sideways in some of the most aggressive closed course racing that you will ever get to see. There wasn’t one truck that didn’t have side panels and hoods flapping and then eventually getting torn off. The crashes were “spectacular” to use a word to describe them. And everyone walked away! Carnage was everywhere. Full Contact, Dirt Flinging, Aggressive, Hard Core RACING!
Although I went for fun, I still ended up chatting with a few people that I knew. Scott, the announcer and huge supporter of CORR, and I know each other from the world of Monster Trucks. Anyone that was there will agree that he is one of the best announcers in off road racing, always laughing, and always on the action. Travis from the Custom Shop in Las Vegas reintroduced me to his friend Paul Tracy, Champ Car Champion. It was Paul’s first time on a dirt course and he ripped it up. I also ran into Rob MacCachren who was one of our drivers for the Sand Car Shoot Out. He is an amazing driver out on the track, and I am sure he drove the Sand Cars to their limit at the shoot out! Suspensions Unlimited and PCI Race Radios had their rigs out and set up on vendor row.
I also got a chance to talk with Adam from XXX Rhinosports. They are the functioning body for the Side X Side Class of CORR. Needless to say, it had been a long weekend when I talked to him and he was exhausted, but excited about the series. This is the first year for Side X Side racing in CORR, and he is watching it grow as more and more racers get involved, and as spectators are seeing the rhinos in the pits. He is hoping that next year will be even bigger and that there will be more Side X Sides out there tearing it up. While I was talking with Adam, Luke, son of Ricky Johnson, dropped by excited about his racing experience and how he may soon wrap up the title for the Super Stock Series at the next race in Texas. Also dropping by was Grant from Funco who was looking to see how his son Chad could secure the championship in the Unlimited Class. As Grant looked around at the tortured Rhinos he said “these things just aren’t built to do what we are doing to them, so then we have to go to the modification stage.” I have never heard it stated better! Later I dropped by the Rhino Mafia pits as they were looking at their wrecked side x side. There is going to be a lot of wrenching that needs to happen before the next round in Texas!
I strongly suggest that if you are in Texas to get to the next round. Or if you are looking for an excuse to head to Las Vegas hit the final round in November. These races are amazing! If not, the races air on NBC – a 90-minute program! Even NBC is on board with this racing – that should say something!
